Battle for the Skies - Dec 5th, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was another battle for the skies last night and the clouds won over most of the night but we did get a nice little idea of what was going on early in the evening.

Quite but Green - Dec 4th, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was pretty tame last night but we did still see a faint band of green off and on throughout the night.

Murky Water - Dec 3rd, Alaska Aurora Cam
We had a pretty good show but the clouds dominated the sky most of the night so what Aurora we did see was pretty murky.

Long Dark Night - Dec 2nd, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was a pretty calm, cold, long, dark night last night though there were moments of subtle, faint green light in the sky. It was a good night to catch up on some needed rest. :-)

A Great Start! - Dec 1st, Alaska Aurora Cam
The month opened up rather nicely with this amazing Aurora display. We're hopeful that it's an indicator of things to come as this month the Sun is expected to make it big polarity flip leading to some intense Auroras. Stay tuned!

Late Night Show - Nov 30th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Thanks to the cloud cover that came in early, this morning's show is quite late but getting better with age as of 6:07AM.

Thanksgiving Surprise - Nov 29th, Alaska Aurora Cam
This morning we got a wonderful desert in the early hours after Thanksgiving though it was a bit hard to see most of the time because of the clouds. It did eventually open up and give us a brief show.

Another Silent Night - Nov 28th, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was another quiet night last night and most of the night was covered in snow clouds. But it did clear up for a nice view of the stars to show us billions of things to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving morning. :-) Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Clouds and quiet - Nov 27th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Though we say plenty of stars during our Arctic Circle excursion, we never say much in the way of Lady Aurora. The sun has forgotten it's supposed to be roaring right now.

Quite Calm - Nov 26th, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was pretty quite on the Aurora front despite having nice clear skies.

Almost There - Nov 25th, Alaska Aurora Cam
It snowed until just after 4 and we had just gotten back in from a night of chasing only to find out we just missed the show. We still had fun making snow angels. :-)

Better Late than Never - Nov 24th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Lady Aurora was being shy tonight and we had all but given up on her. We'd even packed up for the night and were about to venture out when this happened. It was brief but beautiful. Notice all the Aurora Watchers in the foreground. Love hanging out at this cabin. Join us for a your own experience sometime! :-)

Aurora Filled Sky - Nov 23rd, Alaska Aurora Cam
The clouds tried to take over the show early but Lady Aurora would have the final say as she took to the skies and put on one hell of a show!

Too Cloudy - Nov 22nd, Alaska Aurora Cam
Sadly, despite the day starting out cold and clear, we ended up clouding over. The advantage, we also warmed up 40º overnight. Tonight is much warmer but nice and clear and Lady Aurora is already dancing.

Faitly Present - Nov 21st, Alaska Aurora Cam
It's been pretty faint this morning but it's been dancing no less. We'll take it.

Cold but Beautiful - Nov 20th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night was cold! I mean 30 below cold. The kinda cold that takes your breath. But last night was also beautiful! We were up on the hill trying to get the cam back online and took advantage of the situation to make some Aurora photos which you can see on our Facebook page. As of now we've got the cam back up but I had to go to the server to look through the images from early this morning and wow! What a show! Welcome back Lady Aurora. :-)

We're Back!!! - Nov 19th, Alaska Aurora Cam
After what felt like a long absence and some insane weather that cut power to 1/3 of the houses and business in the area and caused plenty of other damages, things are returning to normal here in the Golden Heart City and we are happy to have our camera back as well. The cell tower that provides the internet link was down for about 5 days and we just got up and running again last night.
The camera was still shooting the entire time so we'll dig back through the archives and get the images for the other nights posted once we find have them. :-)aurorawebcamnorthern lightscameracamborealisfairbanksalaskasirius sled dogsmurphy dometourssightseeingnatureadventureronn murray photography
It was a Dark and Stormy Night - Nov 14th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night was a pretty rough night in interior Alaska. The wind, which rarely blows over 10mph in Fairbanks, blew so hard that it knocked over power poles and took power out to 14,000 folks. Schools are canceled for the second day and reports of road conditions are not good. The documentary crew (myself included) is still stuck in Allakaket until things settle and planes resume flights. The camera appears to be down and I'm unable to check it until I get back into town. Hopefully things return to normal tomorrow.

Icepocalypse 2013 - Nov 13th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night's visibility was hindered by the current storm that has brought freezing rain and closed schools. Half of the RMP crew is currently stranded in Allakaket, Alaska as the freezing rain has halted all flights to the bush from Fairbanks. The rain is expected to continue into the night. Hopefully that changes and we get a surprise show tonight.

Faint but There - Nov 12th, Alaska Aurora Cam
The Bz component or as we call it the magic Aurora door, held North most of the night and with mild conditions otherwise it never did allow the Lights to shine very intensely. No less, they did shine. :-)

Grand Spectacular - Nov 11th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Lady Aurora put on quite a show again tonight. Unfortunately, most of the night the show went on behind the clouds. It did open up for about half an hour just after "breakup" but was mostly quite then. Perhaps tomorrow night will bring and open view. Let's hope.

Dark and Snowy - Nov 10th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night we got some much need ground insulation as some parts of the area are reporting up to 10" of new snow over the past 24 hours. And more is still coming down. While hat makes seeing Northern Lights on the camera impossible, it does make for peace of mind for all of us needing the extra insulation to prevent pipes freezing once the sub-zero temps kick in. Plus, imagine the beautiful winter landscapes since we do get our Aurora back.
Even though we can't see it, the lights have been quite active with displays being seen as far south as Wyoming two nights ago. The Sun just unleashed a major X1 flare directly towards us last. hint and we should begin seeing the impact of that tomorrow night in the form of increased Aurora activity as well.aurorawebcamnorthern lightscameracamborealisfairbanksalaskasirius sled dogsmurphy dometourssightseeingnatureadventure
Great Aurora/Bad Weather - Nov 9th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Tonight started off in the clouds but the Aurora conditions spiked like crazy. Perhaps the X1.1 flare from yesterday cam fast and early. I'll know more in a few hours as the data comes in but the sky certainly came to life. Despite that, the clouds broke for a few moments as seen in this image but then quickly the incoming snow storm took over. We're expected to have some major Aurora but we're also expected to have winter storms into Sunday evening. We shall see who wins the battle this weekend. Fingers crossed!

Early Bird Special - Nov 8th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night the Northern Lights cam out early and brilliantly but that intensity didn't last long. By around midnight local time the intensity had subsided and while they stayed out all night, there were spread out and mostly uneventful the rest of the morning. Those who got out early, no doubt got a nice show.

Better and Better - Nov 7th, Alaska Aurora Cam
This season just get's better and better! Tonight started off early and it didn't let up until breakup and even now (5:17AM AKST) it's threatening to come back. For everything October deprived us of, November is more than making up for during this month of thanks! And we are grateful!

Break in the Clouds - Nov 6th, Alaska Aurora Cam
The night was mostly filled with snow clouds as Fairbanks added a couple inches to our snowfall over the course of the past 24 hours but we did get a small break in the clouds for a few moments. During that little window Lady Aurora did indeed make a minor appearance, barely. :-)

Calm Before the Storm - Nov 5th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night was mostly calm. Both on a Earth weather front and in Space weather. But we are getting a good dumping of snow today finally and the Sun just erupted with it's 3rd largest flare of the 11 year cycle so expect some good things to happen in the next few days and if the skies clear, we'll have beautiful snowy Alaska landscapes to include with our Northern Lights photos. :-) Meanwhile, check the galleries link for some of the past photos.

Slow But Steady (Bonus Time Lapse Movie) - Nov 3rd-4th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Don't forget to change the quality to HD. :-)
Last night didn't have the spectacular highlights that we got on the 29th but it sure did show nicely anyway. I've grabbed all the still from the AAC which are shot at 1 shot every minute and compiled this time lapse. The time duration of this sequence is from 11PM-7:30AM. Keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of the Taurids Meteor Shower throughout the video as well.aurorawebcamnorthern lightscameracamborealisfairbanksalaskasirius sled dogsmurphy dometourssightseeingnatureadventure
Early Bird Special - Nov 4th, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was an early bird's delight. At least if that bird was on the Eastern US Coast and was getting up around the same time as yesterday's sun gazers. For those of us in Alaska, most missed the shows save for the night owls, as it never got big until around 1AM. For those of us awake to witness it, it was a good show for a couple of hours and is still going although more moderately as of the time of this posting (4AM). If you slept through it, I'll try to post a time lapse on our Facebook page later in the week.

Daylights Savings - Nov 3rd, Alaska Aurora Cam
While time was working on a delay, the Northern Lights wasted no time getting ready for the evening. The show started early and while it never got as big as the Oct. 30th display, it was worthy of being photographed and that's precisely what we did! :-) Look for photos on our Facebook page which is linking in the left sidebar.

On Again, Off Again - Nov 2nd, Alaska Aurora Cam
It's been a bit off and on tonight with the clouds once again giving small glimpses at the sky beyond them. It's been fun to watch but if we're honest, we're ready for some clear skies. Fingers crossed for tomorrow as the forecast looks a bit more promising.

Likely Story - Nov 1st, Alaska Aurora Cam
Fortunately we did have a good clear night a few nights ago when the skies came alive with the dance of the Northern Lights. Last night however, as has been the case most of the past month, the clouds mostly dominated the sky. Still, we did get little windows into what was going on above those snow producing curtains.

Quiet Night - Oct 31st, Alaska Aurora Cam
It's not really a fair comparison as the previous night was certainly the top display of the season so far here in Fairbanks, but last night was pretty quiet after that show. This was mostly due to a strong northward Bz which keep the majority of the solar energy out of our atmosphere thereby turning the lights off if you will. The Solar Winds did manage to overcome that however for a bit around 4:30 this morning and this was the results.

Bonus Timelapse Video - October 22nd Alaska Aurora Cam
Here is a little bonus. A timelapse video from the night of October 22nd. The sequence starts around 8pm and runs until about 2am the following morning. The images were taken at an interval of 1 minute per image.

Oh what a NIGHT! - Oct 30th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night we finally got the show we'd been waiting for all season! It was as spectacular as they come. Well worth the wait!

Snow Extra - Oct 29th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Throwing an extra image up for today because it looks like our friends up at Sirius Sled Dogs got their snow back! We're still getting rain down here in the Middle Tanana Valley in the city of Fairbanks but the hills finally got the white stuff! Maybe it won't be a brown Halloween after all?
Socked In - Oct. 29th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Still very socked in with the weather here but we are starting to see some movement in the space weather finally. After days of waiting for the much anticipated impact of the recent CMEs, we're finally getting a bit of action.

Rained on Parade Oct. 28th, Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night we had an unusual event for late October, rain. In fact, we may have our first snow free Halloween in Fairbanks in more than 70 years. According to the National Weather Service it only happened once before in 1938. Keep an eye on the daytime cam to see if we get snow. By the way, the temperature at the time of this posting is 54ºF and this day last year the high was 20ºF and the low was 4ºF which was about average for this time of year. Not that we're complaining. ;-)

Uneventful Evening - Oct. 27th, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was another let down last night as the expected CMEs once again had little to no impact. Hopes are still high for tonight but this clouds seem to have taken over. We're hoping things change by this evening.
This just goes to show that as good as space weather forecasting is and even with all the data we have, it's like Earth weather, it's nature and does what it wants. Seeing the Northern Lights is a privilege even for those of us who live in the sweet spot.aurorawebcamnorthern lightscameracamborealisfairbanksalaskasirius sled dogsmurphy dometourssightseeingnatureadventure
A Good Start - Oct. 26th, Alaska Aurora Cam
We started of with a promising morning but it never got much hotter than this tonight. The incoming CMEs are due in a few hours and with a Sun that has been the most active we've ever seen, we expect once the season gets rolling, it's going to be a wild ride. Stay tuned as it's just a matter of time.

Faint Aurora Behind the Clouds - Oct 25th, Alaska Aurora Cam
While the clouds once again dominated most of the skies last night and while the expected CME didn't have the walloping impact it was thought to come with, we did still get some views of Aurora between clouds now and then. Tonight is looking much more promising so keep you eyes on the cam. :-)
aurorawebcamnorthern lightscameracamborealisfairbanksalaskasirius sled dogsmurphy dometourssightseeingnatureadventure
Uneventful Evening - Oct 24th, Alaska Aurora Cam
This were a bit slow tonight as the Bz component was to the North pretty solid all evening and morning. Eventually the clouds took over but we're expecting some great displays over the next few days with the approaching CMEs.
aurorawebcamnorthern lightscameracamborealisfairbanksalaskasirius sled dogsmurphy dometourssightseeingnatureadventure
Battle for the Stage - Oct 23rd, Alaska Aurora Cam
It was another epic battle tonight between the clouds and Lady Aurora. Both got in some good shots and the champion is still up for grabs as we head into the morning hours. This image sums up the show quite well.

The Lights are Back On!!! - Oct 22nd, Alaska Aurora Cam
I'll be honest, I was asleep for this one as I've had early morning appointments all this week but Marketa watched the show and grabbed this shot. She said it was great for about an hour then the Bz component shifted north the the lights went out for a while.

A Slight Dance - Oct. 21st, Alaska Aurora Cam
While it wasn't a big show and it wasn't clear, the Northern Lights did indeed make an appearance last night.

Clear skies complete with lights - Oct. 20th Alaska Aurora Cam
Last night was a bit better than we've had in a while here in Fairbanks, Alaska. We got some nice skies and a bit of a show from the Northern Lights. We're hopeful that tonight will be even better.
aurorawebcamnorthern lightscameracamborealisfairbanksalaskasirius sled dogsmurphy dometourssightseeingnatureadventure
Clear Skies! - Oct 19th, Alaska Aurora Cam
We finally got a nice clear night last night but Lady Aurora, tired from all of her amazing dancing this month, took the night off to rest. Conditions are looking up for tonight so tune in. :-)

Moonlight Sonata - October 18th Alaska Aurora Camera
The clouds broke for a short time this morning giving way for brightly lit moonlight landscapes and views of the brighter stars. However the aurora activity was minimal and thus, not visible in the bright moonlight. A good Aurora would still have easily shown beautifully.
