Aurora Borealis Lane

I was on my way home from the studio in early October of 2011, and I watched the amazing aurora dance in the skies above me all the way along the 7 mile journey. I was tired from a 16 hour editing session and wasn't feeling like shooting so I pulled into my driveway. But as I did the guilt of letting go of such a great show overwhelmed me and I turned around and made my way back to the scene of this photo. I'd had this shot in my head since I first saw the sign a few years prior and this was my chance to get it out of my head and onto the sensor. I'm glad I did. After the lights died down and I finished shooting, I eagerly rushed home to download the images to my laptop. When I came across this image in particular I fell in love with it. I submitted it to spaceweather.com and got my first ever cover photo on the prestigious website. A lovely lady and fellow Aurora Photographer in Iceland found the image on the website and with many details in between, later became my wonderful wife, and partner in life and business.

Irish Dreams

We've been dreaming of shots like this for 3 years. There is a very small stretch along the infamous "Ice Road" where the trees get covered in a thick frost as the humid air blowing up from the Yukon river in the valley below sticks to them to create a magical winter wonderland. During our second to last trip for the season, in what can only be called blizzard conditions otherwise, we got a 40 minute window of mostly clear skies in the wee hours of St. Paddy's morn. This was the beginning of what would turn out to be one of the best weeks of Aurora Chasing this entire solar cycle.

It took 4 years of trying and planning and as many failed trips to Denali National Park and Preserve to make this image happen but the day after Thanksgiving I have much to be grateful for as all the elements finally came together to make this photo possible. Despite temps that dipped down colder than -40ºF causing the frost to win the battle with our car's defrost for the windshield, the conditions were nearly perfect! The wind was nonexistent (very rare for this usually windy location) which helped to keep the trees sharp over the 10 second exposure, the moon was nearly full and coming from the southwest (perfect angle and amount of light for this location), and after working the scene to get the right composition and waiting for nearly an hour, the lights danced magically for about 10 minutes. They then faded out and never really returned. This results from part skill, part planning, part stubbornness and part just dumb luck.

St. Patrick's Celebration - March 17th, 2013

This was hands down the best display we've ever witnessed. The sky exploded with color in the earliest hours of St. Patrick's day and stayed that way until sunrise. It was the kinda night that keeps us out there even on the slower nights.

January 22nd, 2012 brought some of the best displays I've ever witnessed. After literally 100's of hours spent chasing lights in subzero weather, I finally managed to see some of the most dazzling reds yet. This shot of the Corona is just one of the many amazing photos I managed during the 2011/12 season.

Order size is 8x20, 11x28 or 20x50 This night, was one of those night. And it was an adventure. Ronn is amazing driver. He was driving 2,5h in snow storm, blizzard, drifting snow and strong wind.. just to get us under clear skies, perfect half of moon with beautiful Aurora dance above majestic mountains. 9 hours later..all our guests are home, safe and happy 🙂
