Unalaska is remote island in the heart of the Aleutians in Alaska. I was fortunate to visit Unalaska (Dutch Harbor) during some of the most fantastic spring weather anywhere, ever in Alaska. It's one of those places that just gets into your blood and doesn't go away. I find myself longing to return.
Nestled somewhere between the Marshmallow peaks and the glassy bays I discovered a piece of myself I never knew was missing. An appreciation that in the grand scheme of things I am but a tiny grain of sand but that the beautiful shores I stood on were made up of thousands upon thousands of individual grains.
This is never so evident as it is in a place like Unalaska. Here, each person is a unique individual and yet the harsh environment necessitates a strong community bond.
From the extremely gracious and hospitable locals to the amazing transient wildlife this was one incredible place. I feel blessed to have had this opportunity. Despite the external appearance of a glamorous life, being a self-employed photographer is the toughest job I've ever had but this is the kind of trip that makes every struggle wash out with the falling tide.
